The youngest actor ever to win an Oscar for Best Actor for his role in 1952’s Blackboard Jungle (a role he would revisit in 1973 in the TV adaptation of the movie of the same name), Sean Connery became a superstar in the 1970s, starring in such hits as The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), The Man Who Would Be King (1975) and of course, The James Bond franchise. He would go on to win a Golden Globe for his role in the 1997 comedy Continental Divide and would receive a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for 2004’s Brokeback Mountain.
Brimming with charm and humor, and hailed as “The most important actor of his generation,” Al Pacino took the movie world by storm in the 1970s with a string of box office hits including Godfather II, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon. He would win a Golden Globe for his role in the 1971 drama The Godfather, but it was the 1973 romantic comedy The Godfather: Part II that catapulted the “Godfather” to superstar status and earned Pacino a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination. With four Academy Awards in between (including his first Oscar win for Best Actor in 1967’s The Godfather) he remains one of the most popular and beloved actors in the history of cinema. Pacino died of cancer in 2014 at the age of 73.
After a lifetime of being considered the “greatest actor of his generation,” Morgan Freeman quickly became a bona fide superstar, winning his first Oscar for 1993’s Driving Miss Daisy, followed by a string of hits including The Shawshank Redemption and Glory with director Oliver Stone. He would go on to win a Golden Globe for his role in the 1998 thriller The General’s Daughter, but it was the 1999 blockbuster Outbreak that earned him his second Oscar for “Best Actor.” By the time he was nominated for his last Academy Award in 2006 for Million Dollar Baby, he was the oldest actor ever to be nominated for an acting Oscar (he would later win for his work in 2008’s Invictus).
Hollywood's original man-child and perennial funnyman, Peter Sellers often played exaggerated characters and evolved into a character actor who often brought an element of pathos to his roles. He is best known for his madcap comedies, such as The Pink Panther (1963), Dr. Strangelove (1964) and Being There (1979). Sellers was nominated for the “Best Supporting Actor” Oscar for The Fortune Cookie (1966). He died in 1980 at the age of 50.
Sidney Poitier (Lilies of the Field, The Defiant Ones) is one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood for his performances in such films as A Raisin in the Sun (1961), Lilies of the Field, To Sir with Love (1967), To Sir with Love II (1969), The Filthy Thirteen (1971), Limelight (1979), The Black Hole (1982) and Watermelon Man (a remake of the 1952 sci-fi classic The Thing from Another World). Poitier passed away in 1991.
