Last month, I wrote about how The Who’s Tommy musical, which is widely considered to be among the finest rock musicals of all time, came back into the public eye after a long off-Broadway run at the Public Theater. The Who’s Tommy is an apt choice to open Muppets Most Wanted as the musical is a landmark rock opera that is as much about the music as it is about Tommy and his quest for salvation. Tommy is credited as the musical that brought the Muppets from the TV series to the stage.
So I checked out Tommy and also read some recent interviews that Mark Kausler , the Broadway director and Tony-winning choreographer who has directed such musicals as Rent (the musical version of La bohème ), In the Heights (which won Tina Fey a Tony), and If/Then (with Mamma Mia’s Donna Finocchiaro), has been toiling on. Tommy is also one of the only musicals to ever directly follow the life of its subject. After a chat with Kausler, here’s what we came up with.

“I’m hoping to come up with a new production of Tommy one of these days,” said Kausler, who directed the company’s two-year run of Sweeney Todd and two straight seasons of Kinky Boots on Broadway before directing Tommy. “It would have to be a new production in some theater, with a new cast and new ensemble. There’s a lot of ground to cover in that show.”
The other obvious choice for director of any Muppet-based musical would be a guy named James Lapine, the Tony-winning playwright who penned Once and Cyrano de Bergerac as well as the show’s score. “I could make a whole show,” he told Playbill,“but the main thing is, we would want good songs.” Lapine has already written four Muppet-related books, and I could see him writing a book for a musical based on the Muppets.
