Playgroup/Speelgroep For Dutch Speaking Children
Every Dutch or Belgian family in the US finds a solution for things they miss as an immigrant; special foods or ingredients for recipes are carried/smuggled into the US by visiting friends, news from "home" is found on websites or at the Dutch language satellite channel and you can order Dutch books online. But what about Dutch speaking friends to play with? Where do they find them?

Fortunately, members of NAADV have organized their own monthly playgroup for Dutch
speaking children and their parents. They meet every second Saturday morning
of the month at the house of one of the participating members.
The host for the month sends an email to all families on the member list
announcing the date and location and provides information on how to get to
their house. Members who plan to attend reply and just show up. According to
Belgian/Dutch traditions of hospitality, the host usually provides a choice
of baked goods, coffee and often, after a recent visit, fresh treats from
the homeland. Sometimes the host feels compelled to organize special
activities like arts and crafts, games or just swimming in the pool (when
available). However, there is no pressure to do so. In any case, they do look
forward to the monthly event!

There is no playgroup membership fee. Joining the playgroup just means that your
name, address and telephone number with names and DOB of your children is included in
the playgroup list. The list is frequently updated and distributed among
the playgroup members ONLY. As a playgroup member, you can contact others who live close
and/or who have children of similar ages as yours to set up additional play
dates, organize events for parents, etc.
If you sign up, the hope is that you will be able to host some time. If you cannot, that's OK too.
You can always assist a host with baking or organize some activities.
Some houses simply are not suited for playgroups. We try to plan the
playgroup get-togethers such that "big houses" host during the winter and "big gardens"
host in the summer. The group is not too formal and it is as much a social event
for the parents as it is a play date for the children.
